Located on the Cotentin Peninsular in the north west of France, the port town of Granville lies on the English Channel coast and at the mouth of the Bosq and Pointe du Roc. Built on reclaimed land from the sea is the lower town. The upper town is surrounded by 15th century ramparts. Overlooking the town is the Romanesque/early Gothic style church of Notre Dame du Cap Lihou which was built between 1441 and 1796. It is an imposing structure and is perhaps one of the reasons why the town has managed to retain its strong military and religious links to the past.
