Earls Cove is a picturesque village set against the backdrop of astounding Canadian beauty. This laid-back community found within the aptly named Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia, at the northern tip of the Sechelt peninsula that clings to the mainland via a narrow strip of land, is enveloped by dense evergreen woodland and overlooks the crystalline waters of the Agamemnon Channel. The nearby Ruby Lake, a haven for trout fishers, sits between heavily wooded slopes that rise and fall against a horizon unsullied by human expansion. The Sunshine Coast Highway curves around this lake before cutting south between the curtain of pine trees that cover the coast of the peninsula, heading towards the town of Hopkins Landing near the major city of Vancouver. Although the port of Earls Cove is small, it is neatly designed and able to easily handle the flow of passengers looking to travel north across the Jervis Inlet. Traffic arriving at the port is organised into lanes before being escorted along the ramps to board the docked ferries. The terminal building itself is just a cabin at the port entrance. Amenities here include an indoor waiting room with disabled access, passenger toilets, pay-phones and a waterside picnic area that commands sweeping views across the forested bank of Nelson Island on the other side of the channel. A restaurant selling hot and cold snacks is a short walk from the terminal too. Due to Earls Cove’s prime location at one end of the Sunshine Coast Highway, driving to the port from any of the other towns along the western coast of the peninsula is a straightforward affair. A bus occasionally travels along this route from a stop near the harbour but this service only runs a few times throughout the week. Currently one passenger service operates from the port. A BC Ferries line sails to Saltery Bay on a short, daily route that arcs along the tip of Nelson Island before heading on a gradual north-west course towards its destination on the opposite coast.
