The Croatian city of Rovinj lies on the Adriatic Sea coast, on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsular. The city is a thriving fishing port and is also a popular tourist destination. The city's Old Town, which used to be an island secured by medieval walls, has seven gates, of which three still remain today. Artefacts have been found that date back to the Bronze Age although the city didn't really begin to grow until the 3rd century. Interesting attractions in the city's Old Town include the striking Church of St Euphemia and the Balbi Arch, which both have more than a hint of Venice about them.
