Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, and the most populous city in the country with a population of just over one and a half million. The only ferry route departing the port is to Chau Doc in Vietnam, lasting around four hours.

What is there to do in Phnom Penh?

Phnom Penh is everything you would hope for from a southeast Asian city; motorbikes fly around the city, bustling markets offer authentic gifts and alluring architecture once prompted the city to be dubbed ‘The Pearl of Asia’. The entire city is littered with tourist sites and endless attractions, yet to simply walk among the mesmerising chaos that consumes Phnom Penh city centre oftentimes provides enough entertainment for one day. Buoyant bars are packed with locals and tourists enjoying remarkably cheap alcohol, and the restaurants are filled with guests sampling the delicious local cuisine that has become famous in the region. For those that enjoy spending their time adhering to an itinerary, there is plenty to see and do around Cambodia’s capital. The Royal Palace is a particular highlight in a city inundated with historical and cultural landmarks. After visiting the palace, it is worthwhile continuing on the quest for culture by visiting Silver Pagoda, Wat Ounalm and the Phnom Chisor Temple for a satisfying day of sightseeing. How do you get around Phnom Penh?

For public transport, the three bus lines are the best way to get around the city, stopping regularly at popular areas and are usually easy to navigate. For private transport, motorbike taxis are reasonably priced and tuk-tuks are almost compulsory when trying to immerse yourself in Cambodian culture.
