The Italian island of Marettimo is the most remote of the three Egadi Islands which lie off Sicily's west coast. The island, which is simply a rocky ridge that protrudes out of the Mediterranean, lies within a marine nature reserve and is a popular destination for scuba divers, walkers and simply for those seeking a tranquil break. The island only has one town, also called Marettimo, and is a fishing town that has a number of quite humble pale coloured square houses.
The ferries using the island's pretty harbour moor up alongside fishing vessels and diving school boats and is a short distance from another small harbour that is mainly used only by fishermen. Passengers disembarking rom a ferry do so right into the narrow streets of Marettimo where they are greeted by a lovely cosmopolitan atmosphere. At first the island may seem similar to other Mediterranean islands but upon closer inspection, and after a bit of exploring, the island's Italian charm shines through as smart stairways and little catholic shrines are uncovered. Marettimo is around 40 minutes by hydrofoil from Favignana, and an hour from Trapani.
