Nearly all the action is over the estuary in Barrio La Isla, which has become somewhat of a mecca for Hondurans who want to let loose for a few days. Away from the party scene there are several beaches, though many of them are deemed polluted and unsafe so remain largely untouched by tourists. The downtown area has a similarly neglected vibe, but remains more of a tourist hub due to the transport links to La Ceiba’s natural landscapes. There are buses that run to Pico Bonito National Park, the picturesque Cayos Cochinos and the stunning white water on the Rio Cangrejal. The town is relatively small so many of the locals will have knowledge of all the major sights and their transport links; it is advised to have the name of the desired destination written on a piece of paper for easy communication. A taxi rank lies in the centre of the town which is within a relatively short distance from the port, though it is worthwhile negotiating a price before entry.
