Hou Guide

The Danish town of Hou is located in the Aalborg Municipality on the Jutland Peninsular, in the north of Denmark. The area is split by the Limfjord waterway that connects the North Sea and the Kattegat, and which also separates the main part of the Jutland Peninsular from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy. the Limfjord waters are called Langerak to the east and Gjol Bredning to the west. Located in Gjol Bredning is the island of Egholm which is connected by ferry to the city of Aalborg at its southern shore.

The landscape in the area is typical for the north of Jutland. There is a salt water lake to the west, where the Limfjord gets wider and is characterised by low marshy shores and a large number of islands. To the north west is Store Vildmose ("Greater Wild Bog") which is a swamp where in the summer a mirage can sometimes be seen. Lille Vildmose ("Lesser Wild Bog") lies to the south east. In the 20th century, Store Vildmose was drained in order to turn the land into farmland. However, Lille Vildmose is Denmark's largest moor.

Saelvig Guide

The Danish harbour town of Saelvig is located on Samso Island in the middle of Denmark, and is midway between Jutland and Zealand. Ferry services connect the town to the Danish mainland at Hou, in east Jutland. Perhaps the best place to visit when in the town is the Samso Energy Academy where you will learn about the results of the island's experiments and "green technology" in general. The academy, which is actually located in the town of Ballen, with its picturesque harbour, is a great example of building whilst leaving no carbon footprint. Having an eco mindset, and a good pair of walking boots, is probably quite useful when visiting Samso as there is lots to explore, although it is possible to hire bicycles to explore the area if it is preferred over walking. Public transportation is also an option; the regular bus services are run by an energy-efficient telebus system where buses drive on request.

At Saelvig ferry terminal you can park your car, buy tickets and stretch your legs while you wait for the ferry, and continue your journey by bus or taxi. From Saelvig on Samso, the ferry takes foot passengers, cars, motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles to Hou in Jutland. The crossing time is 1 hour.
