The Italian town of Porto Santo Stefano is the largest town on Monte Argentario and lies on the shores of a pretty bay, complete with a busy port and chic marina where visitors can frequently see luxurious super yachts moored up. The town can trace its history back to the end of the 15th century when it was founded by Ligurian and Alban farmers and fishermen. Since the latter part of the 16th century the town grew rapidly which culminated in it becoming one of the most important centres for the Spanish fleet in Italy by the beginning of the 17th century.
