The US city of Fort Lauderdale is located in the State of Florida and lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast, roughly 40 km to the north of Miami. The city's average year round temperature of 77 degrees F, with around 3,000 hours of sunshine, make it a very popular tourist destination. The city takes its name from a series of forts which were constructed by the US during the Second Seminole War in the first part of the 19th century. For visitors interested in the arts, then a trip to the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District is a must. This area runs along Las Olas Boulevard, east to west, from the beach area to the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. In addition to the city's arts and entertainment it is also home to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, a large flea market which is on the site of the world's largest drive-in movie theatre - with 13 screens. The International Swimming Hall of Fame is located on Fort Lauderdale beach, and houses a large aquatic complex as well as a museum, theatre, and research library.
There is a daily ferry service between Fort Lauderdale and Freeport, on the Grand Bahama Island. The 76 mile journey takes roughly 2 1/2 hours
The town of Freeport is located on Grand Bahama, the most northerly of the islands of the Bahamas and is only around 70 miles to the east of Palm Beach in the US State of Florida. Grand Bahama is a regular destination for short cruises departing from Florida and is the fourth largest of the 700 islands of the Bahamas. It is popular with tourists because of its beaches of white sand that surrounds the island and because of its watersports that range from scuba diving and snorkelling to deep sea fishing.
Partly though design and partly as a result of damage caused by a hurricane to other parts of Freeport, Lucaya and its marketplace have become into the tourist centre of the island. There is a nice range of shops and restaurants at the International Bazaar which are themed from places around the world. However, although there remains something here to offer tourists, it has lost many shops to Port Lucaya Marketplace.
