Eckero Guide

Eckero Ferry Port

On the rugged western coast of the Åland Islands, a region of Finland found floating in the middle of the Gulf of Bothnia, is the small municipality of Eckerö. Although the area is under Finnish governance, due to its location nearer to the border of Sweden the majority of locals speak Swedish as their first language. Eckerö is sparsely populated and comprised of a largely untouched landscape that alternates between flat, open farmland and swathes of pine-tree woodland. Found amid this scenic countryside is the main village (also called Eckerö), a community of traditional Scandinavian homes that sit near the west-facing coast of Hus Bay. The port here is located at the end of the Eckerövägen roadway that cuts through the village en-route to the other settlements across the southern edge of the isle, including to Åland Island’s capital of Mariehamn. It’s a relatively small facility featuring a customs office, an indoor waiting area and a compact car-park. Currently only one ferry service leaves from Eckerö a few times per day. An Eckerö Linjen line makes the short trip across the Åland sea to the town of Grisslehamn on the south-eastern coast of Sweden.
