Matsuhima (Maeshima) Ferry Port

Matsuhima is a group of islands laying off the coast of mainland Japan, and are known for the famous bay which is regarded as one of Japan’s ‘Three Great Views’. The only ferry routes departing from Matsuhima are to Hondo and Misumi, other ports belonging to Japan.

What is there to do in Matsuhima?
The unique rock formation on show is what prompts many tourists to visit Matsuhima, though the erosion of the land across the decades has lessened the once glorious aesthetics. The island does still offer a peaceful location for a few days, and still hosts a number of worthwhile attractions: the Zuigan-ji Zen Temple is regarded as one of the most impressive architectural buildings belonging to Japan, and the Kanran-tei Pavilion is an idyllic place to stop for a drink whilst admiring the coastline.

For a whole day of sightseeing, there are tours available which showcase the major sights in the region. If visiting in February, the annual Oyster Festival is a must whilst in the area, especially for those with a taste for sea food. If sea food isn’t a favourable option, there are many vegetarian restaurants dotted around providing deliciously healthy cuisine.

How do visitors get around Matsuhima?
The seaside attractions are accessible on foot, though the best views on the island are achieved from the tip of the hilltops, which aren’t such an easy walk. There are bicycle rental companies, creating an active way to get around, or visitors can get a taxi which are generally fairly affordable.
