Mljet Ferry Port

The southernmost of the larger Adriatic Islands, Mljet is one of many Croatian islands that have sprung into touristic prominence in recent years. There are many ferry routes departing from the port, mainly relatively short crossings to neighbouring Croatian islands.

Mljet is perhaps most well-known for the legend that Odysseus was held captive there for seven years, though after witnessing the astonishingly beautiful scenery and wildly colourful forest, he probably didn’t mind too much. The National Park that covers much of the west of the island is why so many head to Mljet; hours are easily spent basking in the oasis of tranquility that embodies the idyllic environment. It’s popular all year round, though the park is particularly rewarding in the summer when the weather adds to the stunning surroundings.

Despite the justified prevalence of the National Park, Mljet has plenty to offer on the rest of the island. The beaches are postcard picture worthy and aren’t too overwhelmed with tourists, or for those who like to spend their time enjoying more active activities, copious walking trails are scattered about the hillsides. After a challenging walk, hikers tend to stop off by the lake to soak up the refreshing waters.

Most visitors to Mljet use a rental car, otherwise the mountainous terrain can prove too difficult to navigate through. Scooters are also a viable option, and can be a little easier to manoeuvre as well as being slightly cheaper than a car.
