Istanbul (Kabatas) Ferry Port

Straddling the shores of the Bosphorus Strait, a vast waterway that cleaves through the heart of Turkey’s north-western isthmus, is the sprawling city of Istanbul. Known throughout antiquity as both Byzantium and Constantinople, the city has been a cultural and economic powerhouse ever since its foundation in the 6th Century BCE. For over a thousand years the city served as an imperial capital for a host of empires, from the Romans to the Ottomans, who considered it a symbol of their all-encompassing strength.

The Kabatas quarter, found on the European side of Istanbul in the historic Beyoğlu district, skirts a small stretch of the Bosphorus Strait waterfront. The closely-packed streets, shadowed by a mishmash of looming apartment blocks and shops, weave across a slope rising away from the water’s edge. The most striking feature of Kabatas’ skyline is the pointed minarets of the Dolmabahçe Mosque. This 19th Century building is a grandiose building of neo-classical design featuring a vast domed ceiling, a façade shaped by sweeping arches, and huge windows that allow for the sun to cast its brilliance upon the intricate, marble-hewn interior.

The small port in Kabatas is found along the bustling Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi main road. It consists of a number of piers and jetties that stretch into the busy Bosphorus waterway, with a ferry terminal marking its southernmost end. This terminal is little more than a ticket office with a few passenger facilities including an outdoor snack kiosk and a nearby ATM machine.

The port is well supported by a myriad of transport links due to its central city location. Kabatas’ incline train station can be found just a few steps from the port entrance, its cable trains climbing up the hill to Istanbul’s modern heart of Taksim Square. Those driving to the port may find the chaotic labyrinth of inner-city streets difficult to negotiate, though the Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi that runs outside the front of the ferry terminal forms part of the extensive route that covers the entire length of Istanbul along the coast of the strait. Buses regularly run along this route too; whisking passengers from stops outside the port to a host of destinations throughout the city.

One ferry route currently operates from the port in Kabatas throughout the day. A BUDO service sails the short distance south across the inland Sea of Mamara to the port of Bursa on the opposite Turkish coast.
